Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. > Fishing good, conditions very tough!

17 Jun 2009

I hosted Dennis and his wife  today and we did well under the circumstances. First, the bluefish seem to like it here this year. Normally they come for a quick visit, shake up the bait fish and leave for a few more weeks. They have been here since June 10 and you do need to work at finding live bait. It can be disheartening to struggle for a few live baits , just to have a bluefish chop it in half 2 minutes after the drop.

After weeding through the blues Dennis tallied 3 keepers to 34"s and Gail got 1 on the last drift at 29"s.

The winds have been blowing from the east for some time now and the gentle rollers outside have become down right dangerous in the shallow mouth of the Merrimack River! Especially on an out going tide! I found this boat the other day. Fortunately the owner had already been rescued. If you are new to the Merrimack and/ or have a small boat, it might be a very good idea to stay up river.
