Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. > June has come & gone but the great fishing continues!

4 Jul 2012

I start counting the days until June the day I take my boat out of the water. All of the early preparation pays off when the clients show at the dock and suddenly it is gone for another year! This year was both busy and productive fishing "the mighty Merrimack River" , 71% of the stripers landed were 28"s or greater!!!

Now we move on to July.........

The water temps dropped a little to 59-61 degrees and the bluefish seem to be hanging out near the 3 mile line. The mackerel have been plentiful, especially in the early morning. I can only speculate the the cooler water has encouraged  the stripers to feed again as the fishing kicked back up a notch the past few days.

On July 2 Peggy Bunker brought her grandson on his annual charter. We picked up mack's on Hampton Shoal Ledge and found stripers feeding on sand eels in the mouth of the river. After 3 hours of catching fish there  we chased a few flocks of birds offshore for another 7 keeper's in deeper water. After many hits, misses and a few dropped fish total catch was 19 stripers, 17 legal.

Have I mentioned that July is my second favorite month the fish????
