Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. > Some good news!

7 Jun 2015

The wind finally died down, it is warming up (again), the mackerel have returned, there are more fish in the river and more keepers are being caught every day! That sums up the fishing, now let's get down to the catching!!!

All of the wind & cold nights brought the water temps back down to 49 degrees. The macks can handle it but their food cannot so they went back out to sea. I've been getting reports of mackerel on Jeffery's Ledge, 8 miles out & at Halibut Point but could not find one in my "normal" loop which is roughly 5 miles east of the river, then north 4-5 miles, then west to the beach & back to the river. I've donated lots of chum to the ocean but have not seen any results until today. Today I found over a hundred, mostly large mackerel feeding on 6" sand eels. I staid outside for them but my friend Pete went back to the river & used them to catch many bass & at least 2 keepers!!

Dare I say it, let the games begin!

Good fishing
