Merrimack River Report > Beat the heat, go fishing!
Beat the heat, go fishing!

Jul 23, 2011

Yes it is HOT out! But it is a lot cooler on the water. If you are inclined to fish, the Merrimack River is warm and the bass fishing is best early, late or in the dark. If you are like me and have given up fishing in the dark, I am still getting some very nice bass in the mouth mid to late in the out going tide. There have also been some nice surface feeds on the beginning of the incoming tide or "outside". Either drive and look for birds or troll and be ready if one erupts near you. I usually do a combination of the two. I drive past the predictable places and the troll around and wait for something to happen if I do not see surface action.

The mackerel are still here but where they were thick one day it can be a little lean the next. There are just enough bluefish around to scare the heck out of them and then they (bluefish) leave and the mack's come back. You need a lot of chum, several types of sabiki rigs and more than one spot to find bait for it to work on a consistent basis. The rewards are great for the guy with fresh bait. Even a bass sulking in warm water will hit a live mackerel if it is presented a foot in front on it's face!! Another benefit is that most of the fish caught this way are "legal" or just under and they give quite a showing for themselves!!

If you are interested in learning where I find bait or how to rig & slow troll live mackerel, call for a charter and get out of the heat too!
