Merrimack River Report > Loads of stripers!
Loads of stripers!

May 23, 2014

The Merrimack River is really coming to life! Both Wednesday & Thursday there were surface feeds all over the river! There are many from the 2011 year class and are only 14"s. But the slightly older fish are starting to arrive as well. I was catching fish from 20" to 261/2"s yesterday. On fresh water gear, that is a blast!!!! One got into the current & I thought I finally had my first "keeper" of the year.

I have been using a lot of soft plastics, both Texas style and on a light jig. With the 20" & up fish I have had a blast with the Ocean Lures swimming bait fish. Nothing like a surface plug to drive fish crazy. Even the misses are fun to watch!!

Mackerel are still elusive. I have been having to much fun in the river to look for mack's but I have friends who have tried & struck out. I figure that by the end of the weekend they will be in thick. A week after that and the stripers should start chasing down live lined baits!

Good fishing
