Our season has been building up and getting better almost daily. There are fish on Joppa Flats, the Salisbury side, the beach guys seem to be catching off the old Coast Guard sand bar and the mouth has been great both out going & incoming tides. There was a major slow down with the Nor'easter. It shut down the fishing for days and one poor sole perished trying to fish in the rough water. Today, Thursday, the mouth needed respect but it was manageable at low tide and got better/ safer with the incoming tide.
There are a few bluefish in the area. I've seen a photo of one taken from the beach, I know of one caught on Joppa and there are stories of shads on jigs coming back with no tails. There are not enough to target but they do normally make a brief showing in June. They are early this year and frankly I hope they keep on going to some where other than Newburyport!! They scare the heck out of our mackerel and make them hard to find for striper bait. Today they were in the rip line north of Speckled Apron (there had been hundreds earlier I was told) and more farther north on the 3 mile line. The only thing I can suggest is bring plenty of chum and develop your scouting network.
Today's fishing was lights out! 1 charter client, 50 fish total and 14 legal bass / "keepers" caught on a morning trip. It was really, really fun to be a charter boat captain this morning!
Friday is forecast to be small craft warnings so check before you leave the dock but the weekend is looking great!
