Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. > Any Day Now!

8 May 2009

I took Summer Job out for a "shake down cruise" today! It is always great to slid the boat off the trailer for the first time of the season! The boat ran great, she is ready, now for the striper's!!

The water temperature at Cashman Park Ramp, Newburyport MA, was 58 degrees! A very good sign and 5 degrees warmer than last year on the 8th. I turned east toward the ocean and saw the normal herd of seals at Badgers Rocks and saw terns & gannets feeding on sand eels at the mouth. Water temp at the mouth was 49.4 and it warmed to 51 at the 3 mile mark outside.

Long story short, I did not see any mackerel outside, just a few marks at 50' which I'm thinking were herring. No striper's around the jetty's so I went up river to the warmer water. I threw lures at good spots from the Rte. 95 bridge, around the islands and back to Cashmans with out a hit. I am certain that there are hold over striper's here and probably a few small waves of fresh bass but I did not run into them today. There will be fish caught by the time the marinas open on the 15th!

I'm ready, the boat is ready, now it is just a few more days until it is time to play!!

Good Fishing
