Today the skunk left the boat! I caught my first striper's of the year! Were they huge? No, but it only gets better for the rest of the season!
I'm feeling compelled to explain myself. Yes, if I really wanted to be one of the first guys to catch a striper, I probably could have worked at it a lot harder. But the reality is, I fish for my first striper's like I would with a client, during "charter" hours. My job is to put people on fish and teach them how to catch them. So the only fish that I really care about are the ones that I can put my clients on successfully. Not the fish that took me 12 hours, with icicles forming on the rod guides, on a cold dark night. My success is with a smiling client who can go home with a good fish and story to go with it!! Enough explaining..........
The other good news is a friend caught his first mackerel of the year in our area! They have been in Boston Harbor and more recently off Rockport, but following the "scouts" will be the big schools of mackerel with the striper's following right behind!
Other information is that while I was looking for mackerel yesterday I marked bait on the bottom so I checked it out with a sabiki rig. Up came several small pollock. This is the earliest I've caught them inside the 3 mile line. Striper's eat them too, so they will have plenty to eat when they arrive and we all hope they stay around for a long time!!!
Get your fishing arms ready, the games are about to begin!!
Good fishing
