Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. > Mackerel are showing up!

30 May 2011

The Mackerel are starting to show! Only four days later than last year but it seemed very nerve wracking just the same! The outside water temps have risen from 49 to 54 degrees in just 5 days! They will continue to "fill in" so now we need to hunt the "early spots" and some days fill the bait tank easily while others work for enough to fish.

Behind the mackerel will be more & bigger bass. I know there have been a lot of quality fish taken this year but personally feel the season truly begins with the mackerel. The "keeper" sized fish are always easier to find with a live fish on the end of the line!!!

It's been a long winter, hopefully the Honey Do list is almost finished so it is now time to go out and FISH!

Good fishing
