Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. > 1st day on the river!

20 Apr 2012

I could not stand it any longer and took the boat out for a spin! I waited for a 12:08 high tide and of course that is when the wind kicked, but I had to go. I've heard from a couple of reliable sources that there are 15" and better bass in the river. I believe them, but did not find any fish today. In my defense, it is hard to catch a bass when you make 2 casts, start the engine & back away from the river edge, 2 casts & back up. No self respecting striper is going to stay in that area!

The good news is that the water temps were 48-50 on the flats and 57 farther up river! Last year it was May 25 before we had those temps! With early reports of fish in the river PLUS reports of large schools of 15" stripers off Rhode Island last week! It could be a great early season and we are a soild 2 (maybe 3) weeks ahead of last years fish.

We have not had a good schoolie season since 2006!

So cheer up! Soon we will all be fishing AND catching every day!!!

Good fishing
