Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. >
2012 Charter season has begun!
14 May 2012
I have never been the guy to catch the first striper of the year or the first keeper. As long as I catch one before my buddy Pete, I'm happy! This years first fish for me was May 7. I went out next on May 12 (Saturday) & found bigger fish as well as mackerel at breaking rock. I had a charter call from a great couple who were here on their honeymoon from Kansas and Justin really wanted to catch a striper. So we did!
I've caught schoolies up river as small as 12"s but seen keepers caught. The fish are also on Joppa Flats running from the 20"s to 30+"s. The water is muddy from the rain but they are there and hungry. Not as many as there will be but it is only May 14!!! There are also good fish to be caught at the mouth of the Merrimack.
The mackerel are in but again not in the numbers they will be soon. Go to breaking rock or your own favorite spot and bring a lot of chum! The macks are large, no tinkers yet, but I'm targeting better bass and like the big & lively.
A word of caution! The river mouth is very shallow at low tide and can get nasty!!! Even with a NW wind Saturday, the waves were coming in from the SE and there was a wall of water from #2 to the #3 can!! I thought I was being careful and still managed to get very wet and it takes the fun right out of the day!!
Good fishing
