Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. > First Keeper!

17 May 2013

After seemingly cornering the market on either small fish or 27 7/8" fish I broke the ice today with one just under 30"s. I have to say it was a lot of fun on a "trout" rod with 10# test line & a 4" jig!! All of my fish have been caught inside the river at both out going & incoming tides on artificials.

I know that fish are being caught off the beach but I have yet to find a fish in the mouth of the Merrimack. I'm sure they are there some where but not when I'm after them. All good, trolling around the river helps me memorize the new bottom structure so when the big girls show, I'll have a place to start my search.

I've heard the mackerel are in Gloucester and have been for a few days. I will start looking for them next week. I'll need to fill my freezer just in case they pull a disappearing act like they used to. Here for 2-3 weeks and then gone!

I have a few days left in June, so if there is a charter in your future, please give me a call.

Good fishing
