Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. > Fishing improves, first mackerel

19 May 2014

The fishing in the river continues to improve with the schoolies more numerous and aggressive! Yesterday I brought Capt. Chris Valaskatgis of Manolin Charters along and we caught fish on an incoming tide for the first time in '14. All still small (max. 20"s) but fun on light tackle. As to who caught the most fish, we are still waiting for the judges replay to decide the final out come!

Didn't you drop a couple at the side of the boat Chris??? :))

I took Summer Job out into deeper water for a scouting trip & found the first few mackerel of the season! Despite the long cold winter, the fishing is matching up with last year very nicely. I have not heard of or read about any legal bass caught north of Boston yet but I believe that many better bass follow the mackerel "outside" and come inshore with the macks.

FYI, 2013 was my best year for numbers of stripers since 2008 and best year ever for "keeper" sized bass!!

Good fishing
