Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. > July pattern emerging

16 Jul 2014

While the fishing still can be slow, other days it is solid fishing. There seems to be a July pattern emerging. The bass seem to be in the river at high tide and at the mouth for the end of, and turning of, the tides. I have also been seeing more fish outside along the beaches!  Not in huge numbers but when you can boat a 17# -20# striper it makes all of the anticipation worth while! I'm seeing some nice, if brief, surface feeds too!!

Mackerel are still with us but sometimes need more effort. Chum, chum & more chum! I've always managed plenty for a trip so the effort is worth it.

Bluefish have not shown as of yet. Yes, we have had the occasional "head" of a mackerel come back to the boat after a small snapper blue snacks on it. But I do not know of anyone who has landed a bluefish.

It's time to get out there! We are simple not going to get the fishing we had last year but one good fish certainly makes it worth getting up early and getting out there!!!

Good fishing
