Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. > Mackerel invading our waters!

31 May 2016

After 2 "weather days" off I went out this morning & "bailed" mackerel into the boat! 3 days ago the water was full of tinkers & spike (think very small) mackerel. Today 98% were large to "ponies",  put a saddle on them & go for a ride big!! I am hopeful that with the warmer water temps this year we will see bluefish so I'm stock piling bait in my freezers. Better safe than sorry.

Since it is a State Law that you "have" to fish on the way home if you have live bait in the well, I did :)) The keepers are around but not in numbers yet. I have been catching a lot more 26" to 271/2" stripers every day so I'm sure the big girls are just around the corner.

I've added a new set of rods & reels to the mix this summer. These rigs will pull in a good sized fish but also make a 26" striper feel like your pulling on a monster! Fun stuff........

Good fishing
