It's Saint Patty's Day and spring is just 3 days away! Unfortunately Mother Nature did not seem to get the memo!! But we have seen this before and soon the stripers will be swimming north. I plan to start looking for my first schoolie the second week in May which is less than 8 weeks away!! :)) Last year it was May 10th, some years it is earlier. We just have to be out there to find that first fish.
I just looked back 8 years and the average day of my first mackerel was the 21st of May. Earliest was May 12, 2012 & latest was May 28, 2011. I believe those were very cold and then very warm winters back to back. The first keepers are usually caught within a week of the macks arriving. I realize that every year someone latches onto a monster bass much earlier in the Merrimack but I have a theory. I believe that those fish are following herring up river to the dam in Lawrence and "that guy" just happens to land a bait in front of its nose. Right place, right time. Very good for that fisherman but I do not count on being that guy any more than I plan on winning the lottery. I would love to win, don't get me wrong, I just do not plan on it.
It is time to start talking with your family and/or buddies to plan your annual trip on Summer Job. Thank you to the Fish family for booking already. As our lives get busier and family spreads out across the country it get harder & harder to get everyone together. Now is the best time to plan while there are plenty of options on the calendar. I've watched a lot of families grow and now some of the "kids" are now parents. I cannot wait to help teach them to fish as well.
