Merrimack River Fishing Reports, Plum Island area,, Newburyport MA. > Better bass are filling in!

25 May 2017

Over the past week there have been more & more mackerel. Not always easy to find & some times not easy to catch either. I was going as much as 7 miles out & jigging 30' to 50' deep!! Normal is 15' to 20' deep. Yesterday was the first day the macks came to the chum, they are also getting much closer to the beach!! With the close proximity of the mackerel and the river herring making a run up the river, the bigger stripers are right behind them!!

If you just want to go out & bend a rod, the 11" to 15" bass are everywhere! There are more 22" to 27" fish if you move from school to school. I really cannot remember fish in these numbers in 15-20 years! The surface feeding fish in the river seem to be feeding on 11/2" to 2" sand eels so arm yourself with the appropriate soft plastics and have at it. If you are looking for a keeper, rather a better chance at a keeper, live bait is the ticket. Keep in mind that the river is not "full" of fish as it will be soon. You will either have to be in all of the "right places" at the right times of tide or sit & wait for them to move through. Here, experience is the key.

The 2017 striper season is ramping up. Get out & be part of it!

Good fishing
