Merrimack River Report > The fish are back
The fish are back

Jul 30, 2011

I did not fish last weekend but the stories I heard were grim. When I went out Monday I frankly though I was on my way to my first Skunking (I've been chartering since 1999) on a charter! I did manage a couple of decent keeper bass in the end but I was not happy! Tuesday, they were back, 7 fish ( 2 legal) in the first hour and I was on my way to getting my sense of humor back!!!! We were between schools of fish. They only come here to feed for a short time and move on. They do not take up residence for the summer. I've heard reports of guys in the tuna fleet catching big stripers on their tuna baits so they must have been feeding outside our area for a short time.

This is the end of July when the fishing slows down a bit but it is also more varied. Today we trolled up a big bluefish, drifted live mackerel, saw surface feeds and slow trolled up some nice bass on live mackerel. After drifting the mouth of the Merrimack for 6-7 weeks in a row, I like the opportunity to do something different to find fish!

Now is a good time to get out with the family before the summer gets away from you!

Good fishing
