Winter is 2/3's over!

Feb 16, 2013

I hope everyone survived Nemo the Blizzard! We were very lucky to make it thru with our electrical power intact! Summer Job shed the snow and the cover handled the wind (mostly) to wait patiently for spring to arrive. As happens almost every major winter storm, I booked a charter! The call often goes like this, "I've been shoveling snow for 3 #*!%# hours and wanted something FUN to think about!" I happen to like winter but am always happy to talk with a fellow fisherman and plan an adventure on the water.
I was just looking at the SST (sea surface temperature) chart and the water is cooler than last year, but warmer than many winters in the past. What than means is......... I had loads of schoolies "up river" by May 7th and was catching "keeper sized" striped bass by May 13th last year. We could be in for a very good "early" season this year too!
I am booking charters for 2013 and have logged several for June and July already. If you are thinking about a charter here are a couple of things to keep in mind. Yes, there are "more" stripers in June than July. But know that I consider June to be "Hard Core Month" which means that we fish even in some rain & wind under 20mph. It can be a beautiful day or rain gear so prepare for both. Also remember that the "air" temperature and "water temperature" are often the same. If you are a tee shirt & shorts person, bring a sweat shirt & pants along too. July however is very good fishing AND it is usually much warmer! Family fishing at it's best. Just look at the web site. Some of the biggest fish of the year are often caught in July.
As of today there are only 12 weeks and 5 days until my marina re-opens but who is counting! The Cashman Park Ramp is open before my marina and I was using it to catch fish in early May 2012! I am starting to feel like a kid before Christmas. Come join me on Summer Job for a fishing adventure!
Good fishing
