Grateful to fish the Merrimack!
Jun 10, 2013
I keep reading fishing reports and message boards about the poor fishing. I am very glad to fish the Merrimack River! Yes it can get busy but there are fish and many fish in the 30-34" range. Mackerel can be easier some days than others but that is why you put in the time to learn more than one spot! Don't be a one trick pony!
The fish seem to be settling in and spreading out so you do not have to just fish the mouth anymore. My recommendation is to spend one hour of every trip trying something new or a new spot. It does not always work but when it does, write it down in your log and enjoy your success.
Last Friday and Sunday's charters were a success with plenty of stripers and more "keepers" than they wanted for the dinner table. Today (Monday) I went out and caught stripers on macks as well as taking advantage of many surface feeds from the mouth down to the end of the houses. My new favorite Ocean Lure swimming bait fish did itself proud again with fish to 34"s! I do not know how it pulls the better bass out of the pile of assorted sized fish, but I like it!
Stay dry during the next few days! Fishing should start up again by Wednesday!
Good fishing
