Looking Good!

May 3, 2015

Finally it is looking like we will have a fishing season! The weather has changed for the better and looks like it will stay warm this time! Where do I begin???????????????

The NOAA Climate Prediction Center (which has been frustratingly accurate) for the month of May is showing us to be 30%+ chance of being warmer than average! While we had a brutal winter last year, in 2014 it was very cold too!

The NOAA SST chart for May 1st shows the water warming very quickly and it is already warmer than last summer at this time and without the cold water pool blocking us from migrating fish from the south!

The herring run in Newbury has more fish in it than in recent history!

There are shad being caught in the Merrimack River at Rocks Village where the water temps are running 52 degrees!!!! (Out going tide)

I was out on my friend Chris V's boat on May 1st while he tested out his new autopilot. Yes there was an east wind. We absolutely did freeze our butts off too! But while we were on the Merrimack his Lowrance temperature gauge went from 52.5 to 53 degrees!!!

Dave Pickering from Rhode Island has been reporting outstanding fishing since April 29th ! He is catching 1-3 fish at a time using a jig & 2 shrimp teaser flies. Last year he did catch a few before the 29th but then they stopped until May 1st. He is also reporting that this years crop are running from 20"s to near "keeper" size. Last year they were 10-14"s.

Last summer the first "scouts" were caught (that I know of) off the Plum Island Beachfront on May 6th. I started catching them regularly in the Merrimack by May 14th and my 1st mackerel on May 18th!! Remember the water is much warmer this year and they could be here sooner!!!

I am pumped at the possibility of fishing very soon with a real chance of catching my first stripers of the 2015 season!!

Good fishing!
