Merrimack River Report > The great fishing continues!
The great fishing continues!

Jul 8, 2017

We all count the days until the month of June because that is when the "real" fishing starts in our back yard. Well it has come and gone and certainly did not disappoint my clients! We are now past the first full week of July and the fishing continues to be very good! With a week to week comparison of 2016 to 2017, Summer Job only landed six more fish than last year but 48% more legal bass than the entire month last year!

If everything went smoothly, it would not be fishing. Bait has been the issue this year. First we had a couple of quick bluefish invasions, then the minkie whales took up residence a mile (or less) off the beach for at least 4 days and now we are getting the occasional tuna coming into feed on the pogies!

Breaking Rock has been producing mackerel this past week. I admit, I rarely fish there but my buddies have and they did well. The trick to catching mackerel is get out early, use plenty of chum and us a fresh sabiki every time you fish! That tired, rusty and faded sabiki that you paid $2.50 for last year may still catch a mack but will it catch 6?

My friend was catching fish to 20#s, on plugs, on Joppa Flats a few days ago. I've known him for years and believe him. Robert Stuart caught and released a 44" striper from my boat just yesterday!! The mouth is still the hot spot and producing good fish as well as the Parker River. The Parker is a little harder to access if you are not a resident but can be worth the run down the beach.

A word of warning the midgies can be thick without a breeze so bring bug spray. Also the green heads are starting to show up in the boat. You can fish with them if you wear dark long pants, socks and a light colored long sleeve fishing shirt. They are heat seekers and if you leave them alone they will settle down on your pants & inside your boat. Swat at them and they will bite you. I hate them but big fish are a strong motivator.

Good fishing
