The stripers are still around in good numbers and they are quality fish too! I still feel badly that on the 7th day of the heat wave I could not get Tommy & his family a keeper for dinner! It was the only day witout a keeper for me this year and to my knowledge, July 20th was one of the slowest days this summer. The good news is it rained, has been cloudy and got quite cool over the past several days and the stripers are back! It may not be perfect beach weather but it has been great for the fishing! I've been back to 5-10 "keeper" sized fish per trip for the past week and the mood is a lot better in the boat!
The mackerel are still around. I have been chumming heavily in 90-115' of water and getting more than enough for a trip every day. I have not been to Breaking Rock so I do not know how it is there. The macks are growing up so there have not been any tinkers availible but the bigger macks have been catching bigger stripers so all is good on Summer Job.
On the bluefish front, I have only landed 2 snapper blues so far this season. I have had some days when I get 3-6 "bite offs" (reeling in just a mackerel head) and others when there is no sign of them at all. I enjoy targeting bluefish because the fight hard and never quit! There currently are not enough of the critters around to target. Unless, that is, you like 3-6" bluefish. The 3" fish have been outside in deep water for a while now, even the mackerel were eating them. I Just read on Surflands site that 6" blues hit the beach en'mass yesterday. I'm thinking the stripers will love them when they find them!!!
Good fishing
